This brilliant debut by Baylea Hart is a horror story following a gruelling journey through an unwelcoming forest that is so well written, you can see, smell and feel it. Penny struggles to find her way back to her son, having being attacked and set adrift to die on a makeshift raft down river. It was a fascinating process for me as a narrator to maintain the listener's empathy with the deeply unsympathetic protagonist Penny, create the forbidding atmosphere of the forest (which is really like a main character of the book, so viscerally depicted), and help build the story to a terrifying but satisfying climax...
